What bicomponent spunbond is+

Two polymers are co-extruded into a single filament, one forming the core and the other the sheath. In this construction the core is polyester and the sheath is nylon. The core carries strength and dimensional stability; the sheath, which reaches its softening point first, governs bonding, surface behaviour and how the fabric attaches to other layers.

Why the core/sheath structure matters+

A single-polymer web has to compromise between a surface that bonds easily and a structure that stays dimensionally stable when heated. A bicomponent filament separates those two jobs, which is why it is used where a converted assembly is thermally bonded or laminated and the substrate must not shrink or lose strength in the process.

Where it is used+

Filtration converters use it where the support layer must be thermally bonded into a pleat pack or cartridge. Automotive and industrial converters use it as a carrier and backing in thermally assembled parts. It also serves as a substrate in laminated technical products where a bondable surface is required over a stable core.
