1. Problem
Water condenses as droplets inside greenhouse film (blocking light) or food packaging film (blurring product view and dripping onto food).
2. Symptoms
- Water droplets on inside of greenhouse film — reduced light transmission and dripping on crops
- Fog on cold-chain food packaging — poor product visibility at retail
- Condensation dripping into produce trays
3. Investigation (Before Prescribing an Additive)
- Distinguish cold-fog (fresh produce, cold-chain) from hot-fog (hot-fill, microwaveable) — different additive chemistries.
- Check film structure — anti-fog must be on the inner (product-side) surface.
- Check service temperature and duration.
- Confirm food-contact regulation.
4. Candidate Masterbatch Family
One family commonly evaluated is Anti-fog Masterbatch — typically non-ionic surfactants (sorbitan esters, glycerol esters) that migrate to the film surface and spread condensation into a continuous film instead of droplets. Cold-fog and hot-fog additives are different.
