Anti-static Masterbatch — Static Electricity on Plastic Film or Parts

1. Problem

Plastic parts or film hold a static charge — attracting dust, sticking, or creating ESD risk in electronics packaging.

2. Symptoms

  • Dust and particles cling to finished parts
  • Film sheets refuse to separate on de-stacking
  • ESD damage or risk in electronics packaging
  • Sparking during high-speed converting

3. Investigation (Before Prescribing an Additive)

Before recommending any Masterbatch, work through these checks:

  • Classify the requirement — cosmetic dust prevention, machinability, or ESD safety (each has a different surface-resistivity target).
  • Measure current surface resistivity — 10¹⁰-10¹² Ω/sq is typical anti-static; ESD-safe is often ≤ 10⁹ Ω/sq.
  • Check whether performance must survive washing, humidity cycling, or long shelf life — migrating anti-statics fade; permanent (polymeric) anti-statics do not.
  • Confirm regulatory environment (food-contact, cleanroom).

Not every symptom needs an additive — sometimes the correct answer is a resin change, a process change, or drying. Investigation prevents wasted spend on a Masterbatch that does not fix the true root cause.

4. Candidate Masterbatch Family

Two families are commonly evaluated: migrating anti-statics (GMS, ethoxylated amines) — fast and low-cost but decay over time and depend on humidity; and permanent anti-statics (polymer alloys) — higher cost but long service life and humidity-independent.

5. Polymer Considerations

Migrating anti-statics can affect sealing and printing. Permanent anti-statics require careful carrier compatibility. Some are not food-contact-approved.
