Desiccant Masterbatch — Bubbles, Streaks, or Splay When Processing Regrind or Wet Resin
1. Problem
Regrind or hygroscopic-contaminated resin produces bubbles, silver streaks, or splay marks in the finished part, and drying is not practical or sufficient.
2. Symptoms
- Silver streaks or splay on injection-molded parts
- Bubbles or fisheyes in extruded film
- Surface defects on blow-molded parts running regrind
- Frothing at the die
3. Investigation (Before Prescribing an Additive)
Before recommending any Masterbatch, work through these checks:
- Confirm root cause is moisture — not shear degradation, contamination, or entrapped air.
- Check whether the resin should be dried instead — desiccant Masterbatch is a scavenger, not a substitute for proper drying of hygroscopic resins like PET, PA, PC.
- Determine regrind %, storage conditions, and ambient humidity.
- Confirm regulatory environment.
Not every symptom needs an additive — sometimes the correct answer is a resin change, a process change, or drying. Investigation prevents wasted spend on a Masterbatch that does not fix the true root cause.
4. Candidate Masterbatch Family
One family commonly evaluated is Desiccant Masterbatch — typically calcium-oxide-based scavengers that chemically bind residual moisture during processing. It is not a universal fix for wet plastic; it is appropriate for regrind and moderately damp non-engineering resins. Engineering resins (PET, PA, PC) still require proper drying.

5. Polymer Considerations
Compatible with polyolefins and styrenics. Not intended for hygroscopic engineering resins that require desiccant drying, not desiccant Masterbatch.
