Anti-block / Slip Masterbatch — Film Blocking Together or Feeding Poorly

1. Problem

Freshly wound film sticks to itself, or converted bags do not open or feed through packaging machines.

2. Symptoms

  • Film layers refuse to separate on the roll
  • Bags do not open on form-fill-seal lines
  • High coefficient of friction (COF) — poor machinability
  • Squeaking or grabbing between film layers

3. Investigation (Before Prescribing an Additive)

Before recommending any Masterbatch, work through these checks:

  • Distinguish blocking (adhesion between layers) from friction (COF too high).
  • Measure current COF — target depends on end-use (bag opening vs pallet wrap needs different values).
  • Check current additive package — some films already contain slip or anti-block; adding more can cause bloom or sealing issues.
  • Confirm sealing and printing requirements — high slip loading can reduce seal strength and print adhesion.

Not every symptom needs an additive — sometimes the correct answer is a resin change, a process change, or drying. Investigation prevents wasted spend on a Masterbatch that does not fix the true root cause.

4. Candidate Masterbatch Family

Two families are commonly evaluated together: Anti-block Masterbatch (silica, talc, or synthetic anti-blocks) and Slip Masterbatch (erucamide, oleamide). They are often supplied as a combined Masterbatch tuned to the end-use.

5. Polymer Considerations

LLDPE and LDPE film are the primary users. PP film often uses different slip chemistries. Recycled resin may already carry legacy additives that shift COF.
