UV Masterbatch — Plastic Fading, Chalking, or Cracking Outdoors

1. Problem

Plastic parts and films exposed to sunlight lose color, become chalky, or crack after months outdoors.

2. Symptoms

  • Color fading or shift after outdoor exposure
  • White chalky surface (chalking)
  • Surface micro-cracking under stress
  • Loss of tensile / impact after 6-24 months
  • Agricultural or geotextile fabric tearing under load

3. Investigation (Before Prescribing an Additive)

Before recommending any Masterbatch, work through these checks:

  • Confirm the exposure profile — geographic region (kLy/year), hours/day, seasons.
  • Distinguish UV degradation from thermal or chemical attack.
  • Check current formulation — is any UV package present (HALS, UV absorber)?
  • Check pigment choice — some pigments accelerate degradation, some (carbon black) protect.
  • Check base resin — LDPE and PP are more UV-sensitive than HDPE and PET.

Not every symptom needs an additive — sometimes the correct answer is a resin change, a process change, or drying. Investigation prevents wasted spend on a Masterbatch that does not fix the true root cause.

4. Candidate Masterbatch Family

One family commonly evaluated is UV Masterbatch — typically a HALS-based, UV-absorber-based, or combined system dispersed in a polymer carrier. The right chemistry depends on service life, exposure, and any pigment interaction.

5. Polymer Considerations

Carrier must match base resin. HALS and pigment interactions must be confirmed (e.g., some HALS interact with acidic pigments). Carbon-black-pigmented parts often already have inherent UV protection.
