Functional role of polyvinyl alcohol (pva / pvoh)+
PVOH forms strong, oil-resistant, oxygen-barrier films from water solution, which is why it appears in paper coatings, remoistenable and paper-converting adhesives, textile warp sizing and water-soluble packaging film. It also acts as the protective colloid in the emulsion polymerisation of vinyl acetate systems.
Selecting the right grade+
Two variables define a PVOH grade: degree of hydrolysis, which controls water solubility and dissolution temperature, and viscosity, which reflects molecular weight and controls solution behaviour and film strength. Fully and partially hydrolysed grades are not interchangeable.

Polyvinyl alcohol is water-soluble and supplied as a solid for dissolution; polyvinyl acetate is a water-insoluble adhesive polymer usually supplied as an emulsion or solid resin. They are chemically related but not interchangeable, and are quoted separately.
