Functional role of defoamer / antifoam+
A defoamer is a controlled incompatibility. It must be insoluble enough in the medium to enter the foam lamella and collapse it, yet fine enough not to cause craters, fisheyes or gloss loss in the finished film. That balance — persistence against defect risk — is the whole formulation question.
Selecting the right grade+
Silicone-based, mineral oil based and silicone-free polymer chemistries behave differently in each medium, and a defoamer that performs in a high-shear millbase can fail in a low-shear letdown. Application method, film thickness, gloss requirement and whether recoatability matters all drive the choice.

Why does a defoamer sometimes cause surface defects?+
The same incompatibility that lets a defoamer break foam can leave undispersed droplets in the film, seen as craters or loss of gloss. Matching defoamer strength to the system, and testing at production shear, is the standard way to resolve it.

The grade is set by your specification. Share the target performance, process conditions and any customer or regulatory requirement in the RFQ and the matching grade is confirmed with the supplier before quotation.
