Where vinyl ester earns its cost+

Vinyl ester's backbone gives markedly better resistance to water and many chemicals than general polyester, along with better toughness and elongation. In tanks, liners, ducts and marine laminates that difference translates directly into service life, which is why specifiers accept its higher cost over polyester for exposure duties.

Chemical resistance is exposure specific+

There is no universal chemical resistance. Resistance depends on the chemical, its concentration, the temperature, the exposure duration and the laminate construction — including whether a resin-rich corrosion barrier and suitable veil are used. Any resistance claim must come from the supplier's chemical resistance data for the exact grade against your exact service condition.

Processing+

Vinyl ester processes much like polyester: peroxide cure, similar equipment, similar wet-out behaviour. Cure control still depends on catalyst level, temperature and laminate thickness, and post-cure is frequently specified for corrosion service. Surfaces exposed to air may need a wax-containing or sealed topcoat to cure tack-free.

Combining with reinforcement+

Performance in service is a property of the laminate, not the resin alone. Corrosion barriers typically use a surfacing veil and chopped strand, with structural plies over them. Reinforcement type, sizing compatibility and laminate sequence are specified together with the resin.

Specification options+

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. No configuration is presented as stocked or approved until it is confirmed against the supplier's technical data for the exact material offered. Frequently asked questions

Is vinyl ester better than polyester?+

For water and chemical exposure and for toughness, generally yes, and that is what justifies its cost. For dry, cost-driven filled casting, polyester is usually the sensible choice.

Will it resist a specific chemical?+

Only the supplier's chemical resistance data for the specific grade, at your concentration and temperature, can answer that. State the chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure time in the enquiry.

Does vinyl ester need post-cure?+

Post-cure is commonly specified for corrosion and elevated-temperature service. Follow the supplier's schedule for the grade supplied.

Can it be used over an existing polyester laminate?+

It is commonly used for repair and upgrade over polyester, subject to correct surface preparation. Confirm compatibility and preparation with the supplier's guidance.

Why is the exposed surface tacky?+

Air inhibits surface cure in these systems. A wax-containing topcoat or a sealed surface is used where a tack-free finish is required.
