Why urethane dominates production casting+
Urethane casting resins reproduce fine detail, cure fast enough to run several cycles a day from one silicone mould, and give a hard, paintable, machinable part. Compared with epoxy they demould far sooner; compared with polyester they smell less and shrink less. That combination is why bridge tooling and short-run production casting almost always start with urethane.
Pot life is the design constraint+
Many casting urethanes have very short working times, so mould filling, mixing method and batch size must be planned around the pot life of the grade rather than the other way round. Thin sections, complex mould geometry, or several moulds per batch may require a slower grade even if a faster one is available. Selecting pot life first prevents most casting failures.
Moisture, bubbles and surface defects+
Isocyanates react with water, so damp moulds, humid air, wet fillers and open containers cause foaming and pinholes. Standard practice is sealed containers, dry fillers and pigments, moulds at working temperature, careful mixing to avoid whipping in air, and pressure or vacuum casting where surface quality is critical.
Filling, colouring and post-processing+
Mineral fillers can be added for weight, stiffness, cost or thermal behaviour, and pigment pastes formulated for urethane give consistent colour. Fillers change viscosity, exotherm and pot life, so any filled formulation is treated as a new specification with its own trial. Cast parts are typically demoulded, allowed to reach full properties, then trimmed, machined or painted.

Frequently asked questions
How many parts can be cast per silicone mould?+
Mould life depends on the resin, part geometry, release practice and cycle rate. Production shops establish it by trial and then treat mould replacement as a running cost.
Why are there bubbles in my castings?+
Common causes are entrained air from mixing, moisture in the mould or filler, and trapped air in the mould geometry. Pressure casting is the usual production answer for bubble-free parts.
Can fillers and pigments be added?+
Yes, using dry fillers and urethane-compatible pigment pastes. Any addition changes viscosity, pot life and exotherm, so trial the exact formulation before production.
How is pot life selected?+
Start from the mould fill: part size, mould complexity, number of moulds per batch and mixing method. Choose the grade whose working time comfortably covers that sequence.
Is urethane resin UV stable?+
Unmodified urethanes commonly yellow with UV exposure. Where colour stability matters, state it in the enquiry so a grade formulated for the requirement is quoted.
