Deep pour and coating are grades of one system+

Deep pour and thin-film coating epoxies are the same two-component chemistry formulated to different exotherm and viscosity profiles. They are quoted here as grades of one canonical casting resin rather than separate materials, because the buying decision is section thickness and finish, not a different chemical family. State the pour depth and whether a surface coat is required and the correct grade is offered.

Why deep pour formulations exist+

Epoxy cure is exothermic, and heat builds with volume. A general-purpose epoxy poured thick can overheat, yellow, crack, or in extreme cases smoke. Deep pour systems slow the reaction so heat dissipates as it is generated, which allows a thick section in one operation instead of many thin layers with visible interfaces.

Depth limits are real specifications+

Every deep pour system has a maximum single-pour depth, and it interacts with pour volume, mould material, ambient temperature and how well the mould sheds heat. Exceeding it is the most common failure in this category. Take the limit from the supplier's data for the grade supplied and reduce it if the mould is insulating or the shop is warm.

Bubble control and mould construction+

Slow cure helps bubbles rise out, but timber and porous inclusions outgas as the resin warms. Sealing porous material before pouring, warming components to reduce viscosity, and pouring slowly into the lowest point are standard practice. Moulds must be leak-tight and released; melamine, sealed MDF and silicone-lined forms are common.

Finishing and colour stability+

Cast surfaces are typically sanded and polished or top-coated with a coating epoxy to restore gloss. UV exposure is the main long-term risk for clear work; where the piece will sit in daylight, request a grade with UV stabilisation and expect that no clear organic casting is permanently unaffected by sunlight.

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. Frequently asked questions

How deep can a single pour be?+

That is a grade-specific limit stated in the supplier's technical data, and it should be reduced further in warm shops or insulating moulds. Exceeding it causes heat build-up, discolouration and cracking.

Why did my thick pour crack or yellow?+

Almost always excess exotherm from pouring too deep or too much volume at once, or using a coating epoxy where a deep pour grade was required.

How are bubbles from timber avoided?+

Seal the timber before pouring, warm the components to reduce viscosity, pour slowly and allow time for release before the resin thickens.

What mould materials are used?+

Leak-tight sealed and released forms — melamine, sealed MDF, or silicone-lined moulds. Sealing and release are as important as the resin choice.

Is deep pour epoxy the same as coating epoxy?+

No. Coating epoxies are formulated for thin films and cure faster with higher exotherm; using them for thick sections is a common and costly mistake.
