How pour-in-place foam behaves+

Mixing starts a reaction that generates gas, so the liquid expands many times its poured volume and then sets rigid. Two numbers govern the job: free-rise density, which describes the foam when unconstrained, and the density actually achieved in a closed cavity, which is higher because expansion is restrained. Cavity filling is planned by weight of mixed material, not by eye.

Density selection+

Low-density foam is light and cheap but weak and coarse-celled; higher-density foam is stronger, finer-celled, carves and machines better and costs more per part. Choose from the duty — carveability, load, buoyancy, or simple void occupation — rather than assuming the lowest density that fills the cavity is adequate.

Pressure, venting and mould strength+

Expanding foam generates real pressure. Closed moulds must be strong enough and vented so gas and excess foam can escape, or the mould distorts and the part is dense in some areas and voided in others. Overfilling a rigid cavity is a common cause of split moulds and damaged assemblies.

Moisture, temperature and handling+

These systems are moisture sensitive and temperature sensitive: cold components rise poorly, damp surfaces alter cell structure. Containers are kept sealed, components are conditioned before use, and mixing is complete and rapid because the reaction has already begun. Ventilation and personal protection follow the safety data sheets for the components supplied.

Specification options+

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. No configuration is presented as stocked or approved until it is confirmed against the supplier's technical data for the exact material offered. Frequently asked questions

How much foam is needed to fill a cavity?+

Work from the cavity volume and the density you need in the finished part, then dispense by weight. Free-rise density is not the same as the density achieved in a constrained cavity.

Which density should be selected?+

Higher density for carving, machining and load; lower density for simple void filling and weight saving. Selection follows the duty rather than the cheapest fill.

Can rigid foam be carved and coated?+

Higher-density grades are widely used as carveable pattern stock and are typically coated or hard-coated before finishing. Confirm coating compatibility with the coating supplier.

Why did my mould split?+

Expanding foam develops pressure. Moulds must be strong and vented, and cavities must not be overfilled.

Is it suitable for buoyancy applications?+

Closed-cell rigid foams are used for buoyancy, but suitability, water absorption and any regulatory requirement belong to the specific grade and must be confirmed against supplier documentation.
