Cast elastomer versus moulded rubber+

Cast urethane elastomers are poured at low pressure into simple moulds, so a bushing, roller cover or wear pad can be produced without a steel tool. They typically outperform conventional rubbers on abrasion and load capacity for the same hardness, which is why maintenance shops cast replacement parts rather than waiting on moulded ones.

Hardness selection+

Hardness is the primary specification and drives everything else: soft grades absorb shock and conform, hard grades carry load and resist deformation. Selecting from the duty — load, deflection, impact, abrasion, and whether the part must return to shape — is more reliable than copying the hardness of the part being replaced, which may itself have been a compromise.

Moisture control and bubbles+

As with all urethane systems, water is the enemy. Damp moulds, humid air and moist fillers cause foaming and voids that ruin load-bearing parts. Components are kept sealed and dry, moulds are dry and at working temperature, and pressure casting is used where internal voids are unacceptable.

Bonding to inserts+

Many cast elastomer parts are bonded to a metal core — rollers, wheels, mounts. That requires the correct surface preparation and a bonding agent suited to the elastomer; without it the elastomer separates in service. State whether inserts are involved so the appropriate system and preparation are confirmed.

Specification options+

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. No configuration is presented as stocked or approved until it is confirmed against the supplier's technical data for the exact material offered. Frequently asked questions

How is the right hardness chosen?+

From the duty — load, deflection, impact and abrasion — rather than by copying the part being replaced. State the application and the loads and an appropriate hardness range is confirmed.

Can cast elastomer be bonded to a metal core?+

Yes, with correct surface preparation and a suitable bonding agent. Mention inserts in the enquiry so the bonding system is included.

Why did the casting foam?+

Moisture — in the mould, the air, a filler or an open container. Urethane elastomer systems must be handled dry.

Is cast urethane better than rubber?+

For abrasion resistance and load capacity at equivalent hardness it usually performs well, and it can be cast without a steel tool. Conventional rubbers may still be preferred for specific chemical, temperature or compression-set requirements.

What moulds are used?+

Silicone moulds for detailed or undercut parts and simple machined or fabricated moulds for functional shapes, with a release matched to the elastomer.
