Where polyester is the right economics+

Polyester resin costs less than epoxy and accepts very high mineral filler loadings, which is precisely what cultured marble and cast stone production needs — most of the casting is filler and the resin is the binder. Where mechanical performance, adhesion and low shrinkage matter more than cost, epoxy or vinyl ester take over.

Catalyst, accelerator and cure control+

Polyester cures through a peroxide catalyst, usually with an accelerator already present in pre-promoted resin. Catalyst level controls gel time and interacts strongly with temperature and filler loading. Never mix catalyst and accelerator directly together; always follow the supplier's dosing sequence and range for the grade supplied.

Shrinkage, filler and cracking+

Polyester shrinks more than epoxy on cure, and shrinkage is a major source of cracking, warping and mould wear in thick castings. High filler loading reduces both shrinkage and exotherm, which is one reason filled formulations dominate. Filler moisture, particle size and loading level all change the result, so formulations are proven by trial and then held constant.

Ventilation and handling+

Polyester systems release styrene during cure and require effective ventilation and appropriate personal protection. Peroxide catalysts are strong oxidisers with their own storage and incompatibility rules. Handling requirements come from the safety data sheets for the specific resin and catalyst supplied.

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. What is polyester resin used for in cast stone?+

It is the binder in cultured marble and similar filled castings, where a high mineral filler loading provides the mass and appearance and the resin holds it together.

How is gel time controlled?+

Primarily by catalyst level, strongly influenced by temperature and filler loading. Work within the supplier's dosing range for the grade supplied and prove it at your shop temperature.

Why did a casting crack?+

Cure shrinkage and exotherm in thick sections are the usual causes, often combined with insufficient filler loading or a catalyst level that drove the reaction too fast.

Should I use polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy?+

Polyester for cost-driven filled casting and general laminating; vinyl ester where chemical and water resistance matter; epoxy where adhesion, low shrinkage and mechanical performance dominate.

What ventilation is required?+

Effective ventilation is required because styrene is released during cure. Follow the safety data sheet for the resin and catalyst actually supplied.
