Why tooling uses epoxy+

A tool is only useful if it holds its shape. Epoxy shrinks less on cure than polyester, adheres better to a wider range of pattern and core materials, and can be post-cured to raise its service temperature so it survives exothermic parts and heated cures. That combination is why serious moulds are laid up in epoxy even when parts are made in polyester.

Post-cure is part of the specification+

Tooling epoxies reach their published service temperature only after the specified post-cure. Skipping or shortening it produces a tool that distorts the first time a hot part is cured in it. Post-cure is planned as a scheduled step with a defined ramp, hold and cool, following the supplier's data for the grade supplied.

Lay-up sequence+

A tool is typically built as a tooling gel coat or surface coat, then a fine surface ply, then progressive structural plies, allowing each stage to cure within its recoat window to control exotherm and shrinkage. Building too much thickness at once generates heat that prints through to the tool face — the defect that ruins a mould before it is used.

Working conditions and handling+

Epoxy cure rate and viscosity are temperature dependent; cold shops leave under-cured tools and trapped air. Amine hardeners are skin sensitisers, so gloves, eye protection and ventilation are standard practice, with requirements taken from the safety data sheets for the components supplied.

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. Frequently asked questions

Why use epoxy instead of polyester for a mould?+

Lower cure shrinkage, better adhesion and higher post-cured service temperature, which together give a tool that stays dimensionally accurate through production.

Is post-cure necessary?+

Yes, if the tool is to reach its stated service temperature. An un-post-cured tool commonly distorts the first time it sees a hot part.

Why did the tool face show print-through?+

Usually too much laminate built at once, generating exotherm and shrinkage that telegraph to the surface. Build in stages within the supplier's recoat windows.

Can epoxy tools make polyester parts?+

That is standard practice. Release choice and the tool's post-cured temperature capability are what matter, not the part resin family.

What reinforcement is used?+

Typically a fine surface ply against the tool face followed by progressively heavier plies. Reinforcement type and sizing compatibility are specified with the resin.
