Technical & procurement detail

The gel coat is the tool+

Structural plies provide stiffness, but every part reproduces the gel coat surface. A tool face that is soft, porous, pinholed or unevenly built will transfer those defects to every part it makes. Investment in gel coat application quality pays back across the whole production life of the mould.

Film build and pinholes+

Gel coat is applied to a defined film thickness, usually in more than one pass, with the first pass worked into the pattern surface to eliminate air. Pinholes almost always come from air trapped in that first pass, from applying over a contaminated or poorly released pattern, or from cold material that will not wet out.

Backing within the recoat window+

Backing laminate is applied within the gel coat's recoat window so the two cure as a unit. Backing too early distorts the soft face; backing too late risks a weak interface and delamination in service. The window belongs to the grade supplied and is taken from its data sheet.

Post-cure and tool commissioning+

Like the laminating resin behind it, tooling gel coat reaches full hardness and temperature capability only after the specified post-cure. Tools are then prepared for service — polished if required, sealed and released — before the first pull, which is often taken with an extra release margin.

Specification options+

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. No configuration is presented as stocked or approved until it is confirmed against the supplier's technical data for the exact material offered. Frequently asked questions

Why are there pinholes in the tool face?+

Air trapped in the first pass, contamination or poor release on the pattern, or material too cold to wet out. The first pass must be worked hard into the surface.

When should the backing laminate be applied?+

Within the gel coat's recoat window. Too early distorts the face; too late risks a weak interface.

How thick should the gel coat be?+

To the film build specified for the grade supplied, normally in more than one pass. Too thin fails to hide the pattern; too thick can crack.

Is post-cure required before use?+

Yes, to reach full hardness and temperature capability. Tools put into service un-post-cured degrade quickly.

Can a worn tool face be recoated?+

Refacing is common practice with proper preparation of the existing surface. Confirm the preparation requirements with the supplier's guidance for the grade supplied.
