E-Glass Chopped Strand Mat — Hand Lay-Up Reinforcement

Allzone Trading supplies E-glass chopped strand mat to composite fabricators, tooling shops, tank and lining contractors and repair specialists across Canada. Chopped strand mat is the standard bulk reinforcement for hand lay-up, giving random-orientation strength and easy conformity to complex shapes. Mat weight, binder type and roll format are confirmed against supplier technical data at quotation.

Technical & procurement detail

What chopped strand mat is+

CSM is short glass strands laid randomly and held together with a binder. Because the fibres run in every direction, its properties are close to equal in the plane of the laminate, and it conforms readily to curves and corners. It is the standard way to build thickness and interlaminar bulk in hand lay-up work.

Binder compatibility is the key specification+

The binder holding the mat together must dissolve in the resin being used. Emulsion-bound mat is intended for styrene-containing systems such as polyester and vinyl ester; powder-bound mats behave differently and some mats are unsuitable for epoxy. Ordering mat without stating the resin system is the most common cause of poor wet-out and delamination.

Selecting mat weight+

Lighter mat conforms better to detail and wets out faster; heavier mat builds thickness in fewer plies. Complex geometry usually runs lighter mat in more plies; flat panels run heavier mat for productivity. Laminate schedules combine mat with woven roving or cloth where directional strength is required.

Lay-up practice+

Mat is wetted thoroughly and consolidated with rollers to remove air; dry patches and trapped air are the main defects. Laminate exotherm is managed by controlling how many plies are applied at once, particularly in thick sections and warm shops, and storage is kept dry because damp glass wets out poorly.

Specification options+

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. No configuration is presented as stocked or approved until it is confirmed against the supplier's technical data for the exact material offered. Supplier grade names, factory codes and manufacturer brands are not published here.

What to include in your enquiry+

Send the resin system, mat weights required, roll width, monthly consumption and the type of laminates you build.

Frequently asked questions

Can chopped strand mat be used with epoxy?+

Only mats with a binder suited to epoxy. Standard emulsion-bound mat is intended for styrene-containing resins such as polyester and vinyl ester. Always state the resin system when ordering.

Which mat weight should be used?+

Lighter mat for complex curvature and detail, heavier mat for building thickness on flat areas in fewer plies.

What is the difference between mat and woven roving?+

Mat has randomly oriented short fibres and gives near-equal in-plane properties with easy conformity; woven roving has continuous fibres in defined directions and gives higher directional strength. Laminate schedules commonly alternate them.

Why is the laminate white or dry in places?+

Insufficient resin or inadequate consolidation. Wet out fully and roll to remove air; dry patches become weak points.

How should mat be stored?+

Dry, sealed and off the floor. Damp glass wets out poorly and compromises laminate quality.

Are technical documents provided before ordering?+

Yes. The supplier technical data sheet and safety data sheet for the exact grade offered are provided with the quotation, and the working properties in those documents govern — not any general description on this page.

What quantities are quoted?+

Quantities are reviewed per enquiry, from trial quantities through to pallet and full container programmes for production users and distributors.
