Polyester Gel Coat — Composite Surface Coat
Allzone Trading supplies polyester gel coat used as the finished surface of composite parts and as the working face of polyester moulds. Gel coat carries appearance, weathering and first-line protection for the laminate underneath. Colour, thixotropy, cure system and film build are confirmed against supplier technical data at quotation.

Technical & procurement detail
What gel coat does+
Gel coat is applied to the mould first, so it becomes the outer surface of the part. It provides colour and gloss and acts as the barrier between the environment and the laminate. Because it is thin and highly loaded with pigment, it is more sensitive to film thickness and cure than the laminating resin behind it.
Film thickness discipline+
Too thin, and the gel coat undercures, remains soft or shows the laminate through; too thick, and it becomes brittle and cracks in service, especially over sharp radii. Production shops measure wet film thickness rather than judging by eye, and treat film build as an inspected process parameter.
Cure, catalyst and conditions+
Catalyst level, resin and mould temperature and humidity all shift cure. Under-catalysed or cold gel coat stays tacky and may wrinkle when the laminate is applied; over-catalysed gel coat gels before it levels. Backing laminate is applied within the window specified for the grade so the two bond as one system.
Common surface defects+
Pinholes usually come from air or contamination in the first pass; fisheyes from silicone or oil contamination — a common consequence of using silicone-bearing releases or air lines without filters; alligatoring and wrinkling from undercure or premature backing; print-through from too little gel coat or excessive laminate exotherm. Almost all of these are process defects rather than material defects.
Specification options+
Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. No configuration is presented as stocked or approved until it is confirmed against the supplier's technical data for the exact material offered. Supplier grade names, factory codes and manufacturer brands are not published here.
What to include in your enquiry+
Send whether the surface is a part or a mould face, the colour required, your application method, the service environment and your production volume.
Frequently asked questions
How thick should gel coat be applied?+
To the film build specified for the grade supplied, measured wet rather than judged by eye. Too thin undercures and shows print-through; too thick cracks.
What causes fisheyes?+
Silicone or oil contamination on the mould surface or from unfiltered compressed air. Silicone-bearing releases are a frequent cause in shops that also paint.
Why is the gel coat still tacky?+
Undercure from low catalyst level, low temperature, or air inhibition. Check dosage against the supplier range and check shop and mould temperature.
Can gel coat be used as a mould face?+
Tooling grades are formulated for that duty and are harder and more polishable than part gel coats. State whether the surface is a part or a mould.
Can it be repaired?+
Gel coat repair and refinishing is routine with correct preparation, colour matching and cure. Follow the supplier's repair procedure for the grade supplied.
Are technical documents provided before ordering?+
Yes. The supplier technical data sheet and safety data sheet for the exact grade offered are provided with the quotation, and the working properties in those documents govern — not any general description on this page.
What quantities are quoted?+
Quantities are reviewed per enquiry, from trial quantities through to pallet and full container programmes for production users and distributors.
