Talc in PP — stiffness, HDT and dimensional stability

Adding 20–40% micronised talc to homopolymer or copolymer PP dramatically increases flexural modulus, raises heat-deflection temperature and reduces moulded-part shrinkage. This is why nearly every automotive interior part in North America contains 10–25% talc-filled PP. Particle size (D50) and aspect ratio determine the stiffness-vs-impact balance.

Coated vs uncoated talc

Surface-treated talc disperses faster in PP and PE and reduces moisture pick-up, which matters for moulded parts that need consistent dimensional stability. Untreated talc is the cost-down choice for less demanding applications.

GTA automotive Tier 1 and Tier 2 supply

Several automotive Tier 1 and Tier 2 compounders in southern Ontario take talc by the FTL truckload weekly. We coordinate JIT delivery from Richmond Hill to plants in Tillsonburg, Concord, Bradford and Markham.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard talc loading in PP automotive parts?+

Typical loadings range from 10% (light interior trim) to 40% (bumpers, structural parts). Higher loadings increase stiffness but reduce impact strength.

Is your talc asbestos-free?+

Yes — every lot ships with an asbestos-free declaration verified by independent testing.

Can you also supply talc as a ready masterbatch?+

Yes — 70% loaded talc concentrate in PP carrier is in stock, MFI 6–10, ready to drop into the customer's hopper.
