Why PVA behaves differently+
PVA fibre is hydrophilic and forms a chemical bond with the cement matrix, unlike polypropylene which relies mainly on mechanical anchorage. That strong bond is what allows carefully designed PVA composites to show ductile, multiple-cracking behaviour instead of a single failure crack — but it also means bond strength must be balanced against fibre pull-out in mix design.
Where it is worth the cost+
PVA fibre costs more than polypropylene, so it is specified where performance justifies it: repair mortars that must accommodate movement, thin sections that must resist cracking, and engineered composites designed for ductility. For simple plastic shrinkage crack control, polypropylene micro fibre is usually the economical choice.
Mix design sensitivity+
PVA composites are sensitive to matrix design — binder content, fines, water content, admixtures and fibre geometry all interact. Published ductile behaviour comes from carefully proportioned systems, not from adding fibre to an ordinary mix.
