What MEKP does+
MEKP initiates the cure of pre-promoted polyester and vinyl ester resins. Dosage sets gel time: more catalyst means a faster gel, a higher peak exotherm and more risk of cracking in thick sections; less means a longer gel and, below the working minimum, incomplete cure and permanent surface tack. Dosage is always taken from the resin supplier's range, not from habit.
Temperature changes everything+
The same dosage behaves very differently in a cold shop and a warm one. Shops that keep resin, filler and moulds within a controlled temperature band get repeatable gel times; shops that do not chase catalyst levels all year. Trial each seasonal change rather than assuming a fixed percentage.
Handling and storage — non-negotiable+
MEKP is a strong oxidiser. It must never be mixed directly with cobalt accelerator or any promoter — that combination can react violently. It is kept in its original vented container, away from heat, ignition sources, reducing agents, acids and metals, and it is dispensed with dedicated equipment. Storage temperature limits and shelf life come from the supplier's documentation and are not optional guidance.
Safety in use+
Eye and skin protection is mandatory; MEKP causes serious eye damage. Spills are managed under the safety data sheet procedure for the product supplied, and waste is not consolidated with other chemicals. Every user in the shop should be trained on these rules before the first drum is opened.
Specification options+
Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. Frequently asked questions
How much MEKP should be added?+
Use the dosage range in the resin supplier's data for the grade and temperature you are working at, and prove it with a gel-time trial. Dosage is not a fixed universal percentage.
Can MEKP be mixed with cobalt accelerator?+
Never directly. The combination can react violently. Accelerator is dispersed in the resin first, and only then is catalyst added, following the supplier's sequence.
Why is my laminate still tacky?+
Under-catalysation, low temperature or air inhibition at the exposed surface. Check dosage against the supplier range, check shop temperature, and use a sealed or wax-containing topcoat where a tack-free surface is needed.
How should MEKP be stored?+
In its original vented container, within the supplier's temperature limits, away from heat, ignition sources, accelerators, reducing agents, acids and metals, and within its stated shelf life.
Does MEKP expire?+
Yes. Organic peroxides lose active oxygen over time and are shelf-life limited. Use the supplier's stated shelf life and storage conditions and rotate stock.
