What silica fume actually changes+
The measurable effects are lower permeability, higher compressive strength and a tighter surface. In GFRC, it also reduces free calcium hydroxide, which is one of the reasons alkali resistant glass reinforcement retains more of its strength over time in properly designed mixes.
Water demand and admixture interaction+
The particle size that makes silica fume effective also makes it thirsty. Mixes almost always need a high range water reducer to stay workable, so the silica fume dosage and superplasticizer dosage are developed together rather than separately.
Choosing between densified, undensified and slurry+
Undensified powder disperses more readily but handles poorly, densified powder handles well but needs adequate mixing energy, and slurry removes the dust issue entirely at the cost of storage and logistics. The right form is a plant decision driven by mixer type and handling, not a quality ranking.
