The colour-safe pozzolan+
Silica fume works but darkens the mix; fly ash works but carries colour variability. Metakaolin is used where the specification is a light or pigmented finish and the producer still wants the density, strength and permeability benefits of a reactive pozzolan.
Efflorescence and durability+
By consuming free calcium hydroxide, metakaolin reduces the leachable material that drives efflorescence on decorative units. Producers who fight white bloom on dark pigmented products often address the binder system before they change pigment or sealer.
Not all calcined clay is metakaolin+
Reactivity depends on the source clay and the calcination process, and material sold loosely as calcined clay can be far less reactive. Grades are qualified on reactivity data and trial performance rather than on the name alone.

Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. Can metakaolin replace silica fume?+
It is used for similar reasons but behaves differently in water demand and colour, so substitution is validated by mix trial rather than assumed.
