Speed and chemistry, not a Portland substitute+
Calcium aluminate cement is selected for what Portland cement cannot do: usable strength within hours, service at elevated temperature, and survival in acidic environments. It is not a drop-in replacement, and mixes designed around Portland hydration behave very differently when the binder is changed.
Blended and ternary systems+
Most rapid-set commercial formulations combine calcium aluminate cement with Portland cement and calcium sulfate to control setting and dimensional behaviour. The proportions are highly sensitive, so formulation work is done with the supplier's technical data and verified by trial rather than scaled from a published recipe.
Conversion and long-term strength+
Pure calcium aluminate hydrates convert over time, and unless the mix is designed for it, that conversion reduces strength. Formulators handle it by controlling water content and using established binder systems, which is why product design work matters more here than raw binder selection.
Specification options+
Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format.
