Why anyone leaves Portland cement+
MgO systems set fast, bond well to organic fillers such as wood and straw, and stay non-combustible. That combination lets manufacturers make thin, light, fire-resistant boards that a Portland system would not deliver at the same thickness or cycle time.
Reactivity is the whole specification+
Calcination temperature determines how reactive the magnesia is, and dead-burned magnesia will not build a binder at all. Grades are selected on measured reactivity, and a change of source is treated as a formulation change.
Moisture sensitivity in service+
Oxychloride systems are known for moisture movement and, in poorly designed products, chloride-related corrosion of embedded metal. Serious producers control the salt ratio, add modifiers and design the product for its exposure rather than relying on the binder alone.
