Polyurethane rubber versus silicone+
Polyurethane mould rubber typically offers higher tear strength and abrasion resistance and costs less per kilogram than silicone, which is why high-cycle concrete production leans on it. The trade-off is sensitivity: urethane is moisture sensitive during cure, bonds tenaciously to unreleased surfaces and is less forgiving about master preparation. Silicone releases almost anything with little effort; urethane demands disciplined sealing and release.
Moisture is the main failure mode+
Isocyanate chemistry reacts with water. Damp masters, humid shop air, wet fillers or pigment, and open containers all lead to foaming, surface bubbles, tackiness and weak rubber. Production shops keep containers sealed, use dry pigments and fillers, control shop humidity, and dry or seal porous masters before pouring.
Release discipline+
Urethane must never touch an unreleased porous surface. Masters are sealed and then treated with a release matched to the rubber. Under-releasing destroys the master and the mould together, so most production shops standardise a single sealer and release routine and audit it rather than leaving it to the operator.
Selecting hardness+
Softer urethane releases deep texture and undercuts; harder urethane holds edges and resists distortion under heavy concrete. Because urethane is inherently tougher than silicone at equivalent hardness, many concrete producers can run a harder grade than they would in silicone and gain mould life. State the product, texture depth and demould method so an appropriate hardness is confirmed.

Frequently asked questions
Why choose polyurethane rubber instead of silicone?+
Higher tear and abrasion resistance at lower material cost, which matters for high-cycle concrete and cast stone production. Silicone remains easier to release and more tolerant of imperfect master preparation.
Why did my urethane mould foam or stay tacky?+
Almost always moisture — a damp or unsealed master, humid air, wet filler or pigment, or a container left open. Urethane systems are moisture sensitive and must be handled dry.
Does a urethane mould need a release agent?+
Yes, always, and the master must be sealed first. Urethane bonds strongly to unreleased porous surfaces and will destroy both the master and the new mould.
Can concrete be cast directly in urethane moulds?+
It is one of the main applications. Release practice, mould rigidity and demould timing follow the rubber supplier's guidance for the grade supplied.
How is mould life compared with silicone?+
Life depends on the product cast, release discipline, cleaning and storage. Producers evaluate cost per casting rather than cost per kilogram, and often trial both families on the same part before standardising.
