How latex mould making works+

Latex is not a two-part cure system. It is a water-based dispersion that forms a film as water evaporates, so the mould is built by applying many thin coats and letting each dry. A usable mould can take a dozen or more coats over several days. The result is a thin, stretchy skin that peels off complex shapes easily and stores compactly.

Strengths and limits+

Latex is inexpensive per mould and extremely flexible, which suits deep undercuts on statuary. Its limits are equally clear: build time is long, the mould shrinks as it ages, thin skins need a support shell, and latex is degraded by sunlight, ozone and prolonged contact with some materials. It is a production tool for simple repeated shapes rather than a precision tooling material.

Building and supporting the mould+

The first coats are worked into detail with a brush; later coats can be thicker, and open fabric is sometimes embedded on large moulds. Once complete and fully dry, a plaster or fibreglass mother mould supports the skin during casting. Moulds are stored relaxed, dusted, away from light and heat, and never folded under load.

Health and handling+

Natural rubber latex can cause allergic reactions in sensitised individuals, and studios manage that with gloves, ventilation and awareness. Ammonia is present in many latex dispersions and requires ventilation during use. Handling requirements for the specific product supplied come from its safety data sheet.

How long does a latex mould take to build?+

Many thin coats with drying between each, commonly over several days depending on coat thickness, humidity and airflow. Latex trades build time for low material cost.

What can be cast in a latex mould?+

Plaster, gypsum, concrete and cast stone are the common uses. Compatibility with other materials is confirmed against the supplier's guidance for the grade supplied.

Does a latex mould need a support shell?+

Yes. It is a thin flexible skin with no rigidity of its own and needs a plaster or fibreglass mother mould during casting.

How should latex moulds be stored?+

Dry, dusted, relaxed and out of direct sunlight and heat. Light, ozone and prolonged compression all shorten mould life.

Is latex a substitute for silicone?+

No. Latex suits low-cost, high-flex moulds for simple repeated shapes. Where dimensional accuracy, chemical resistance or long mould life matter, silicone or urethane is the correct choice.
