How addition cure works+
Platinum cure silicone cures by an addition reaction with no by-product released. Nothing leaves the system, so shrinkage is negligible and the cured rubber is dimensionally stable over years rather than months. That stability is why resin casters, prototype shops and effects studios keep platinum moulds in service far longer than tin cure equivalents.
Cure inhibition is the main risk+
The same chemistry that gives clean cure makes the system sensitive. Sulphur-containing clays, latex, some tapes and adhesives, tin-cured silicone residue, certain epoxies and unsealed surfaces can poison the catalyst and leave a permanently tacky uncured layer against the master. The defence is simple: seal the master, keep platinum work away from tin work, and always cure-test a small patch on the actual master before pouring a full mould.
Selecting hardness and viscosity+
Softer grades peel off deep undercuts and delicate detail without tearing; harder grades hold registration under pressure and resist distortion in a support shell. Lower viscosity grades flow into fine detail and de-air more readily; thixotropic grades stay put on vertical surfaces. These are configurable options in the same family, chosen from the part rather than assumed.
Skin-contact and food-contact grades+
Specific platinum cure grades are formulated for skin-contact effects work or food-contact moulding. Those properties belong to the individual grade and its documentation, never to platinum cure silicone as a class. If your application requires skin or food contact, state it in the enquiry so a grade with the appropriate supplier documentation is quoted.

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between platinum and tin cure silicone?+
Platinum (addition) cure releases no by-product, so shrinkage is negligible and mould life is long, but it is vulnerable to cure inhibition from contaminants. Tin (condensation) cure tolerates contamination and costs less, but shrinks slightly and ages faster.
Why did my silicone stay sticky against the master?+
That is classic cure inhibition — commonly sulphur clay, latex, tin-cure residue, certain tapes or an unsealed surface. Seal the master and run a small cure test on the actual surface before committing a full pour.
Is platinum silicone suitable for casting polyurethane resin?+
It is the usual choice for urethane resin casting because it holds dimensions and gives long mould life. Release practice still follows the resin supplier's guidance.
Can it be used for skin-safe work?+
Only where the specific grade supplied carries that qualification in its documentation. State the requirement in the enquiry and a suitable grade is quoted; it is not a property of the whole class.
How is pot life extended or shortened?+
Pot life is a property of the grade and is influenced by temperature; some families also offer accelerator or retarder additives. Work from the supplier data for the grade supplied rather than adjusting mix ratio.
