What a flap disc is+

A flap disc is an angle-grinder abrasive built from overlapping coated abrasive flaps bonded radially onto a backing plate. As the outer edge of each flap wears, fresh abrasive is exposed underneath, so the disc keeps cutting instead of glazing. That construction gives it a working behaviour between a grinding wheel and a sanding disc: it removes material, but it also leaves a blended surface, which is why welders and fabricators often complete grinding and finishing with a single disc rather than changing tools.

How it is used in professional workflows+

Typical use is on weld seams — knocking down the weld crown and blending it into the parent metal — and on fabricated parts that need deburring, edge breaking or coating removal before assembly, painting or inspection. Maintenance teams use flap discs for corrosion and coating removal on structures and equipment; auto repair shops use them for weld work and panel preparation. Because the disc conforms slightly at an angle, it is also used on radii, contours and fillet welds where a rigid disc would gouge.

Disc profile: Type 27 and Type 29+

Flap discs are commonly supplied in a flat profile (widely referred to as Type 27) and an angled or conical profile (Type 29). The flat profile presents the abrasive close to parallel with the work and is generally used for flatter surfaces, lighter blending and finishing. The conical profile presents the abrasive at an angle and is generally used for more aggressive stock removal and for edge and contour work. The profile is specified per order alongside diameter and arbor.

Abrasive grain and variant guidance+

Aluminium oxide is the general-purpose grain for mild and carbon steel and general fabrication work. Zirconia alumina is a tougher grain generally selected for heavier grinding and for harder or work-hardening materials, including stainless steel. Ceramic grain is used where a longer-lasting, high-pressure grinding action is required. Backing plates are supplied in different materials — commonly fibreglass or plastic, and trimmable types — and the choice affects how the disc can be used down to the plate and how it is disposed of. Where iron contamination must be avoided on stainless steel, a contaminant-free specification is requested explicitly and confirmed against supplier documentation.

Choosing the grit+

Grit selection follows the same logic as any coated abrasive: coarse for removal, fine for finish. Coarse grits take material off a weld quickly but leave scratches that a later step must remove; finer grits leave a better surface but work more slowly. Most shops standardise on two or three grits per material and step through them. Share the material, the weld or feature being worked and the finish required, and the grit range can be discussed with the supplier before quoting.

Flap disc or grinding wheel?+

A bonded grinding wheel is thicker, more rigid and generally the faster choice for heavy stock removal such as taking down a large weld or dressing a rough edge; it leaves a coarse ground surface that usually needs a second operation. A flap disc removes material more gradually and leaves a blended surface in the same pass, which often replaces the separate finishing step. Many shops use both: the wheel where a lot of metal must go, the flap disc where the surface has to look right afterwards.
