What a cut-off wheel is+
A cut-off wheel is a thin bonded abrasive wheel, normally reinforced, designed to cut on its edge. Instead of grinding across a surface, it is fed into the workpiece in a straight line and the abrasive removes a narrow kerf of material. It is used on portable angle grinders, on cut-off saws and chop saws, and on stationary cutting equipment, depending on the wheel specification. Cut-off wheels are consumables: they wear down in diameter as they cut and are replaced routinely.
How it is used in professional workflows+
Fabricators use cut-off wheels to cut sheet, plate, bar, angle, tube and structural section to length before welding. Installers and contractors use them for threaded rod, fasteners, rebar and site modifications. Maintenance and repair teams use them for dismantling and for cutting seized or damaged components. In each case, the cut is normally deburred or dressed afterwards with a grinding wheel, flap disc or coated abrasive before assembly or coating.
How thickness affects cutting+
Wheel thickness is the main trade-off in cut-off work. A thinner wheel removes less material, so it generally cuts faster with less effort and puts less heat into the workpiece, which matters on thin sheet and on stainless steel where discolouration and heat input are a concern. A thicker wheel is more robust and better able to tolerate the side loading and rougher handling common on heavier structural cutting and site work. Choosing thickness therefore starts from the material thickness and the working conditions, not from a preference for one number.
Diameter, arbor and machine compatibility+
Diameter must be within the range the tool and guard are designed for, and the arbor or centre hole must match the machine. A larger wheel gives more depth of cut but only on a tool rated for it. Wheels for portable grinders and wheels for stationary saws are specified differently and are not automatically interchangeable.
