Cotton Linter Pulp

Cotton linters are the short fibres remaining on the cotton seed after the long lint has been ginned off. Chemically cleaned and processed into sheets, they yield a cellulose pulp whose cellulose content is naturally high because the raw material contains far less lignin and hemicellulose than wood. That is the whole reason the material exists commercially: it is a non-wood cellulose feedstock, chosen where the downstream process is sensitive to what is in the pulp rather than to how it forms a sheet. Purity, viscosity class and ash content are the parameters that decide acceptance, and they vary by producer and grade — Allzone confirms them against supplier documentation rather than publishing values.

Cotton linter pulp is not a grade of wood pulp and is not the same purchase as dissolving wood pulp. Dissolving wood pulp is a purified wood-based cellulose; linter pulp is cotton-based. Some downstream processes can be designed around either feedstock and some cannot, and the specification, price behaviour, supply base and trade classification are different in each case. If your process could accept either, say so in the enquiry — but treat the two as separate qualifications rather than assuming a swap is possible.

Normally specified on alpha cellulose content, viscosity class, ash and residual impurities, brightness where relevant, moisture and presentation. Allzone asserts no values for any of these; the grade is confirmed against supplier documentation at quotation, together with the intended downstream process.

Cotton linter pulp is produced in cotton-growing and cotton-processing regions and is not a Canadian-origin material by default. Allzone quotes it as an internationally traded specialty cellulose, sourced against the enquiry. Origin, mill, availability, certification and specification are confirmed at quotation against the lot actually offered. Origin is a supply attribute, never an assumed property of the product, and no fibre source is implied by this page.

Commonly relevant documentation: mill quality certificate / certificate of analysis, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading, and — where contracted in advance — chain-of-custody documentation. Availability of each document is confirmed per order, per mill and per destination.

Useful in a first enquiry: the exact pulp type and grade, the end use, quantity in metric tonnes or containers, destination port, the fibre or specification you must match, and your Incoterm. For cotton linter pulp also state: the downstream process or derivative, the viscosity class and purity basis you qualify on, ash and impurity limits, required presentation, sample requirement and any destination-specific documentation.

Pulps of cotton linters fall within HS 4706.10. The tariff line applied to a shipment is verified against the material actually offered and the destination's classification practice.
