Bleached Hardwood Kraft Pulp (BHKP)
Bleached hardwood kraft pulp is the short-fibre side of a furnish. It gives formation, bulk, opacity, smoothness and softness where softwood pulp gives strength — and the fibre species behind it changes how it behaves on the machine.

Northern bleached hardwood kraft (NBHK)
Northern hardwood species, typically including aspen and birch. A distinct fibre profile from southern-hemisphere eucalyptus grades.
Aspen hardwood kraft
Northern hardwood grade selected where its particular fibre geometry suits the furnish.
Bleached eucalyptus kraft (BEKP)
Eucalyptus fibre grade widely used in tissue and fine paper. Not technically interchangeable with northern hardwood grades.
Mixed tropical / other hardwood grades
Available where the species mix suits the application. Species and origin are confirmed at quotation.
Typical applications
- Tissue and hygiene furnishes where softness and bulk govern
- Printing and writing papers
- Coated and uncoated fine paper
- Folding boxboard and white-lined board plies
- Specialty papers requiring formation and opacity

Technical & procurement detail
What BHKP is and what decides quality+
Bleached hardwood kraft pulp is chemical pulp made from hardwood species and fully bleached. Hardwood fibres are shorter and more numerous per gram than softwood fibres, which is why hardwood pulp is used for formation, opacity, smoothness, bulk and — in tissue — surface softness, while long-fibre softwood pulp carries the strength. The commercial decision is rarely 'hardwood or not'; it is which hardwood, at what refining response, in what ratio with softwood. Fibre coarseness, fibre length distribution, brightness, brightness stability and cleanliness are the parameters that decide acceptance, and all of them vary by mill and by species. Allzone asserts no values for them: they are confirmed against supplier documentation at quotation.
One product, several fibre origins — and they are not equivalent+
Northern bleached hardwood kraft (NBHK), aspen hardwood pulp and bleached eucalyptus kraft (BEKP) are grade and fibre-origin options within this single canonical product rather than separate products, because a buyer selects between them inside one purchasing decision. That is not a statement that they are interchangeable: northern hardwood and eucalyptus fibres differ in coarseness, length and refining response, and swapping one for the other changes formation, bulk and softness in a furnish. Fibre species, origin and grade must be confirmed at quotation and re-qualified on the machine before a substitution is made.
How it works with softwood pulp+
Most furnishes are a ratio, not a single pulp. Hardwood pulp supplies the sheet surface and the bulk; softwood pulp such as NBSK supplies the strength that lets the sheet survive the machine and the converting line. Buyers moving hardwood ratio up to reduce cost usually find the limit at the point where strength or runnability falls off, so state your current furnish and the property you are trying to protect when you enquire — it changes which hardwood grade is worth quoting.
Specification basis+
Normally specified on fibre species, brightness and brightness stability, coarseness and fibre length distribution, refining response, cleanliness/dirt count, moisture on an air-dry basis and bale presentation. Values differ by mill, species and grade and are confirmed against supplier documentation at quotation.
Supply and origin context+
Bleached hardwood kraft is produced in northern hardwood regions including Canada, and in large volume in South America and other regions from plantation eucalyptus. Canada has an established bleached hardwood kraft production and export base, but no origin is implied for a given offer. Origin, mill, availability, certification and specification are confirmed at quotation against the lot actually offered. Origin is a supply attribute, never an assumed property of the product, and no fibre source is implied by this page.
Commercial and shipping notes+
Traded on an air-dry tonne basis; confirm the weight and moisture settlement basis in the contract · Quoted FOB, CFR or CIF, container or breakbulk · Fibre species is a contract term, not a courtesy note — state it explicitly if your furnish depends on it · State any certified-fibre requirement so chain of custody is contracted in advance.
Documentation+
Commonly relevant documentation: mill quality certificate / certificate of analysis, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading, and — where contracted in advance — chain-of-custody documentation. Availability of each document is confirmed per order, per mill and per destination.
What to include in an enquiry+
Useful in a first enquiry: the exact pulp type and grade, the end use, quantity in metric tonnes or containers, destination port, the fibre or specification you must match, and your Incoterm. For BHKP also state: the fibre species you can accept, the finished grade and furnish ratio, brightness requirement, refining capability, cleanliness limits, moisture basis, certification requirement and bale presentation.
HS classification+
Bleached non-coniferous chemical wood pulp of the sulphate (kraft) type, other than dissolving grades, falls within HS 4703.29. The line applied to a shipment is verified against the material actually offered and the destination's classification practice.
Frequently asked questions
Are NBHK and BEKP interchangeable?+
No. They are different fibre origins with different coarseness, fibre length and refining response. Both can be quoted under this product, but a substitution has to be qualified on your machine, and the species is fixed in the contract.
Why is there no separate page for eucalyptus pulp?+
Because eucalyptus, aspen and northern hardwood grades are options inside one purchasing decision. Publishing a page per fibre origin would split the same commercial identity across duplicate pages without helping the buyer choose.
Can you quote BHKP together with softwood pulp?+
Yes. Furnishes are usually a hardwood/softwood ratio, and both sides of that ratio can be quoted in the same enquiry — state the ratio and the finished grade so the pair is quoted against the same production target.
Where is the material produced?+
Origin, mill, availability, certification and specification are confirmed at quotation against the lot actually offered. Origin is a supply attribute, never an assumed property of the product, and no fibre source is implied by this page.
What documentation is issued with the shipment?+
Mill quality certificate, packing list and shipping documents are the normal set, with certificate of origin and chain-of-custody documentation added where they are contracted in advance. Allzone confirms exactly which documents the offering mill can issue before the order is placed rather than promising them in advance.
