Canola Meal

Canola meal is the protein co-product left after oil extraction, and it earns its place in a ration on amino acid profile rather than on crude protein alone. It is particularly well regarded in dairy rations, where its rumen-undegradable protein fraction supports milk production, and it is widely used in poultry, swine and aquafeed formulations. The extraction route changes the product. Solvent-extracted meal is lower in residual oil and higher in protein on a like-for-like basis; expeller (mechanically pressed) meal retains more oil, which raises energy density and changes how a nutritionist balances the ration. Neither is better in the abstract — they are different inputs. Fibre is the practical constraint. Canola meal carries more fibre than soybean meal, which caps inclusion rates in monogastric diets. A formulator who knows the fibre and fat figures can place the meal accurately; one working from crude protein alone will over- or under-formulate.

Solvent-extracted canola meal: Lower residual oil, higher protein basis; the standard traded grade. Expeller / cold-pressed canola meal: Higher residual oil and energy; different ration placement. Pelleted presentation: Improves flowability and reduces dust in bulk handling. Non-GMO canola meal: Subject to a contracted segregated programme.

Crude protein — Commonly around 35–38 % as fed; confirmed per lot. Moisture — Normally 12 % maximum. Crude fibre — Stated per lot; the main inclusion-rate constraint. Crude fat — Low for solvent-extracted, higher for expeller grades. Glucosinolates — Low, consistent with the canola definition. Values vary by grade, crop year and supplier and are confirmed against supplier documentation at quotation.

Canadian canola crushing plants produce meal as a co-product of oil extraction, and the meal is a well-established internationally traded feed ingredient, particularly into dairy markets. Availability is tied to crush volumes rather than to a separate crop. When crush margins tighten, meal availability follows — a point worth building into long-run feed procurement planning. Origin, availability, grade and certification are confirmed at quotation for the lot actually offered — origin is a supply attribute, never an assumed property of the product.
