Why feed cakes in the first place

Caking is driven by moisture migration, hygroscopic salts (choline chloride, trace mineral sulphates), fat inclusion, compaction under bin head pressure, and temperature cycling between day and night storage. Once particles bridge, mass flow becomes funnel flow, discharge becomes erratic, and the mixer no longer receives the intended ratio of micro-ingredients.

How the three common carriers behave

  • Feed grade silicon dioxide — very high surface area, works as a physical separator on particle surfaces; the usual choice for hygroscopic premixes at low inclusion.
  • Bentonite — a layered clay that binds free moisture and also acts as a pellet binder; typically used at higher inclusion than silica.
  • Zeolite — a porous aluminosilicate used where moisture and ammonia adsorption in the barn or in storage matters as much as flow.

Practical guidance for feed mills

Fix the moisture source before increasing the anti-caking dose. Check condensation in bins, cooling after pelleting, and storage humidity. Confirm that the additive you buy is a feed grade with the documentation your regulator and your customer's audit require — food or technical grades of the same chemistry are not interchangeable on a feed label.
