Alpha Lipoic Acid — Supplement Grade

Alpha lipoic acid, also called thioctic acid, is a sulfur-containing fatty acid supplied as the racemic material, meaning it contains both the R and S forms. It is offered as powder, granular, solvent-free and coated presentations, has a low melting point and is sensitive to heat, light and moisture.

Racemic alpha lipoic acid contains both enantiomers and is a different commercial purchase from R-alpha-lipoic acid, which is quoted from its own record. Assay alone does not distinguish them, so state which identity your specification requires and ask for the enantiomeric data that supports it.

The free acid softens and can polymerise under heat or humid storage, producing a sticky, discoloured mass.
