Flame Retardant Masterbatch — Plastic Burns or Fails a Flame Rating

1. Problem

A plastic part must pass a flame-rating standard (e.g., UL 94 V-0, glow-wire, FMVSS 302) and the base resin fails.

2. Symptoms

  • Part ignites and continues to burn in the flame test
  • Fails UL 94 V-2, V-1, or V-0 target
  • Excessive dripping in the test
  • Fails glow-wire for electrical enclosures
  • Fails FMVSS 302 for automotive interior

3. Investigation (Before Prescribing an Additive)

  • Identify the exact rating and standard (UL 94 V-0 vs V-2 vs 5VA; FMVSS 302; EN 45545; glow-wire class).
  • Classify the polymer — halogenated, non-halogenated (phosphorus, nitrogen), or intumescent chemistries behave very differently across resins.
  • Check end-use restrictions — halogen-free may be required (electronics, transport, EU directives).
  • Check mechanical and color implications — high FR loading often reduces impact and shifts color.

4. Candidate Masterbatch Family

Multiple families are commonly evaluated: brominated FR, phosphorus-based (halogen-free), nitrogen-based, and intumescent systems. Selection depends on the target standard, resin, and halogen-free requirement.

5. Polymer Considerations

Carrier and FR chemistry must be matched to the base resin. Some FRs interact with pigments, stabilizers, or glass fiber. Regulatory constraints (RoHS, REACH) restrict several legacy chemistries.
