Winter Traction Sand & Sand–Salt Mix

Winter traction sand is an abrasive material applied to icy or snow-covered surfaces for grip; plain sand does not melt ice. Sand–salt mixes combine abrasive sand with a salt component and require a separate blend specification. Allzone handles sourcing enquiries for Canadian winter-maintenance buyers, with the exact material and commercial terms subject to quotation-specific confirmation.

Technical & procurement detail

Traction and ice melting are different functions+

Plain abrasive sand provides surface grit, not chemical ice melting. A sand–salt mix adds a deicing component, but its behaviour depends on the salt chemistry, blend, weather and application. Select the material for the intended surface and maintenance programme rather than treating both forms as interchangeable.

Selection inputs+

Include plain sand versus a salt-containing mix, required sand gradation and fines limits, moisture expectations, salt type and blend proportion with its basis where relevant, application equipment, quantity, packing, destination city or region and requested timing. Offered mix proportions are quote-specific, not a universal formulation.

Winter sand is not filtration silica sand+

Filtration and industrial silica sand are specified for different duties. Their mineral identity or particle size alone does not establish winter-traction suitability. This enquiry concerns winter sanding materials, assessed against the intended surface and equipment.

Storage, handling and cleanup+

Consider moisture exposure, material flow during cold conditions, equipment suitability and cleanup of residual grit. Salt-containing blends also require review of surface sensitivity and chloride exposure. Relevant specifications and handling information depend on the proposed material and documentation available for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does plain traction sand melt ice?+

No. Plain sand provides abrasive grit for traction; it is not a chemical deicer.

Is every sand–salt mix the same proportion?+

No. State the required salt type, proportion and basis; the offered blend must be confirmed per quotation.

What packing and availability apply?+

Include the quantity and packing needed in your enquiry. Availability, offered packaging and commercial terms are subject to confirmation for the proposed source.
