Sodium butyrate is the sodium salt of butyric acid, used in animal nutrition as a short-chain fatty acid source. Uncoated material has a strong characteristic odour and is released early in the digestive tract; coated products use a fat or matrix coating to reduce odour in the mill and to change where the butyrate is released.
Coating changes both handling and function+
The odour of uncoated butyrate is a genuine mill-floor issue, and coating addresses it. Coating also changes the release profile and lowers the butyrate content per kilogram, so the coated and uncoated forms are never substituted at the same inclusion rate.
