A silane carries a hydrolysable group that bonds to the inorganic surface and an organofunctional group that reacts with or is compatible with the polymer matrix. The result is a durable interface: composites hold mechanical properties after moisture exposure, filled compounds gain strength instead of just weight, and adhesives keep bond strength under humidity and heat cycling.

The organofunctional group must match the resin chemistry — amino, epoxy, vinyl, methacryl and sulfur-functional silanes are not interchangeable, and the wrong pairing gives no coupling at all.
