How PVA differs from wax and semi-permanent releases+

Wax and semi-permanent systems bond to the mould surface and provide a very thin parting layer. PVA instead dries into a continuous film that sits between mould and part — a physical barrier rather than a surface treatment. That makes it the safest option on new moulds, repaired surfaces and risky first pulls, at the cost of a slight loss of surface fidelity.

Application and film integrity+

PVA is sprayed or wiped in even coats and allowed to dry to a continuous film. Pinholes, runs and thin spots are exactly where a part will stick, so coverage discipline is the whole job. It is water soluble, so it must be fully dry before resin contact and must not be applied over surfaces that will remain wet.

Where it is used together with wax+

Many composite shops wax the mould first, then apply PVA over it for the first pull from a new tool or after a repair. The wax gives surface quality and the PVA gives insurance. As confidence in the tool grows, the PVA is dropped and the shop runs on wax or a semi-permanent system alone.

Clean-up and surface finish+

PVA washes off the part and the mould with water, which simplifies preparation for painting or bonding compared with silicone-bearing releases. The finished part carries the texture of the PVA film, so where a high-gloss surface directly from the mould is required, a wax or semi-permanent system usually gives a better result.

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. Frequently asked questions

When should PVA be used instead of wax?+

On new or repaired moulds, on porous plugs and patterns, and on any first pull where sticking would be costly. It is a physical barrier and is more forgiving than a surface-bonded release.

Can PVA be used over wax?+

Yes, and that combination is common practice for first pulls: wax for surface quality, PVA over it as insurance.

Does PVA affect surface finish?+

The part reproduces the PVA film, so a very high-gloss direct-from-mould finish is usually better achieved with wax or a semi-permanent release.

How is PVA removed?+

It is water soluble and washes off both the part and the mould, which makes it convenient before painting or bonding.

Why did a part stick despite PVA?+

Almost always a film defect — pinholes, runs, thin coverage or resin applied before the film was fully dry. Film continuity is the entire function of the product.
