Why wax still dominates tooling shops+

Wax gives the thinnest practical parting layer, so it preserves fine detail and high gloss better than film-forming releases, and a properly waxed mould can deliver several pulls before recoating. It is also cheap, forgiving to apply and easy to top up mid-run, which is why composite shops keep it as the default and reserve PVA and semi-permanents for specific situations.

Application: thin coats, full buff+

Wax is applied sparingly, allowed to haze, then buffed to a clear film — several thin coats build a better release than one thick smear. Unbuffed wax leaves a cloudy transfer on the part and can interfere with paint and bonding. New moulds are given more coats than production moulds because the surface is still porous at a microscopic scale.

Temperature limits and resin compatibility+

Waxes are physical release layers with a temperature ceiling; elevated-cure processes can soften or displace them. Some formulations also carry silicone, which is unacceptable where the part will be painted or bonded. State the cure temperature and any downstream finishing so a suitable grade — silicone-free if required — is confirmed.

Wax, PVA or semi-permanent?+

Wax for surface quality and routine production; PVA over wax when a new or repaired mould makes sticking likely; semi-permanent systems where many pulls per application and consistent process control matter more than the lowest material cost. Most shops combine these deliberately rather than choosing one for everything.

Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. No configuration is presented as stocked or approved until it is confirmed against the supplier's technical data for the exact material offered. Frequently asked questions

How many coats of wax does a new mould need?+

More than a production mould, because a new surface is still microscopically open. Build several thin buffed coats and confirm the recommended sequence in the supplier's data for the grade supplied.

How many parts can be pulled per waxing?+

That depends on the resin, part geometry, cure temperature and mould surface. Shops establish it by trial and then recoat on a fixed cycle rather than waiting for a part to stick.

Does release wax interfere with painting?+

It can, especially silicone-bearing formulations. Where parts are painted or bonded, request a silicone-free grade and clean the part before finishing.

Can wax be used at elevated cure temperatures?+

Only up to the limit of the specific wax. State the cure temperature in the enquiry so a grade rated for that process is quoted.

Should wax be buffed?+

Yes. Unbuffed wax transfers to the part as a cloudy film and can create finishing problems. Buff each coat to a clear surface.
