Moulding Alginate — Lifecasting Impression Material

Alginate is a seaweed-derived hydrocolloid supplied as a dry powder. Mixed with water it becomes a smooth slurry that gels into a soft, rubbery negative. Because it is water based, non-heating during set and easily released from skin and hair, it is the standard impression material for casting living subjects. It is a single-use, short-life material: the gel holds accurate dimensions only while it retains its water, so a positive is normally cast the same day.

Powder is measured against water by weight or volume, mixed rapidly to a lump-free slurry, then applied to the subject before gelling begins. A plaster bandage or rigid mother shell is usually built over the alginate to hold its shape once removed. The negative is then filled with casting plaster, alpha gypsum or a casting resin to produce the positive. Because the mould distorts as it dries, studios plan the whole sequence — mix, apply, support, demould, cast — as one continuous operation.

Set speed is the main selection decision. Faster grades reduce the time a subject must hold still and suit hands and small areas. Slower grades give more working time for large surfaces, layered application or multi-person crews, but extend the time the subject is under the material. Water temperature also shifts set behaviour, which is why studios standardise their water source. Ask for the grade that matches the size of the area, the crew and the studio conditions rather than assuming a single universal set time.

Alginate for lifecasting is chosen because it is intended for direct skin contact and sets without generating meaningful heat. Suitability for skin contact is a property of the specific grade supplied and is confirmed against the supplier's documentation for that grade. Dust should be controlled during mixing, and this material is not offered for medical, dental or any implantable use.

Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format.
