What casting plaster is+
Casting plaster is calcined gypsum (calcium sulphate hemihydrate) that rehydrates into a solid when mixed with water. Beta-process plasters such as pottery plaster produce a comparatively porous, absorbent set, which is exactly what slip casting needs: the mould draws water out of the clay slip and forms a wall. The same absorbency makes it a poor choice where a dense, hard, low-porosity surface is required — that is the role of alpha gypsum.
Consistency is the controlling variable+
Every plaster grade is designed around a specific water-to-plaster ratio, usually quoted as consistency. Mixing wetter than the design ratio gives a weaker, more absorbent mould; mixing drier gives a denser, less absorbent, stronger one. Studios that standardise consistency by weight get repeatable moulds; studios that mix by eye do not. The correct ratio for the grade supplied comes from the supplier's data sheet, not from a general rule.
How it is used in professional workflows+
Plaster is sifted into weighed water, allowed to slake, mixed to disperse lumps, then poured in one continuous action into a sealed and released mould box or over a released model. After initial set the piece is demoulded and dried thoroughly before use; residual water in a slip casting mould reduces its absorbency and its working life.
Working life and storage+
Plaster is hygroscopic. Bags absorb atmospheric moisture, and partially hydrated plaster sets faster, weaker and less predictably. Stock is kept sealed, off the floor and rotated. Moulds themselves are consumable: absorbency falls with each casting cycle and with soluble deposits from the slip, so production shops plan replacement rather than expecting indefinite life.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between pottery plaster and alpha gypsum?+
Pottery plaster is a beta-process plaster with a more porous, absorbent set — the property slip casting depends on. Alpha gypsum is produced differently, mixes at a lower water ratio and sets denser and harder, which suits detailed positives and hard-wearing pieces rather than water absorption.
How much water should be used?+
Use the consistency the supplier specifies for the grade supplied and measure by weight. Deviating from that ratio changes strength, absorbency and set behaviour, so it is a specification, not a preference.
Can casting plaster be used for slip casting moulds?+
Pottery plaster grades are made for that purpose. Confirm the intended application when enquiring so the appropriate grade is quoted.
Why did a mould stop absorbing water?+
Absorbency falls as the mould accumulates soluble salts from the slip and as pore structure is compacted with use, and it is also reduced if the mould was never dried fully. Slip casting moulds are consumables with a finite number of cycles.
How should plaster be stored?+
Sealed, dry, off the floor and rotated. Plaster that has taken up atmospheric moisture sets faster and weaker and produces inconsistent moulds.
