What MIG/MAG welding wire is+

MIG/MAG wire is a solid consumable electrode fed continuously into the joint while an external gas shields the arc and the molten pool. MIG strictly refers to inert gas shielding, MAG to active gas mixtures containing carbon dioxide or oxygen; both are forms of GMAW and both use the same wire families. Because there is no slag to chip, the process is fast, easy to mechanise and dominant in general fabrication, sheet work and manufacturing cells.

Alloy families and classifications+

Carbon steel wires are the general fabrication family and differ mainly in silicon and manganese level, which controls deoxidation and tolerance of mill scale and light surface contamination. Classifications of the ER70S form are the usual reference points and appear as specification options here, not as separate products. Stainless wires match the base grade being welded, and aluminium and other alloy wires are supplied where the base material requires them. The wire is always chosen against the base metal, the required strength and the surface condition of the parts.

Shielding gas and transfer mode+

The gas determines much of the arc behaviour. Pure carbon dioxide gives deep penetration and low cost with more spatter; argon-CO2 mixtures give a smoother arc, better bead appearance and access to spray transfer at higher current; stainless and aluminium work uses their own mixtures. Short-circuit transfer suits thin material and out-of-position work, spray transfer suits higher-deposition flat and horizontal work, and pulsed modes fall between. The gas, transfer mode and wire are specified together because they define the achievable position and property set.

Diameter and packaging+

Thinner wires suit sheet metal, thin-wall parts and out-of-position work; larger diameters carry more current and suit thicker sections and higher deposition. Packaging follows the cell: handling spools for manual welding, larger spools for continuous shop use, and bulk drums for robotic and mechanised lines where changeovers must be rare. Cast and helix, layer winding quality and feeding behaviour matter most on automated systems and are confirmed against supplier data.

What is the difference between MIG and MAG welding wire?+

The wire families are the same; the difference is the shielding gas. MIG uses inert gas, MAG uses an active mixture containing carbon dioxide or oxygen. Both are GMAW, and the gas is specified alongside the wire because it affects penetration, spatter and transfer mode.

Which classification should I use for carbon steel?+
