What TIG welding rods are+

TIG filler rods are bare, straight-cut lengths of filler metal added by hand into an arc struck from a non-consumable tungsten electrode under an inert gas shield. Because the filler is separate from the arc and the shielding is inert, GTAW gives the cleanest and most controllable weld of the common processes — which is why it is chosen for root passes, thin sections, stainless and nickel alloy work, sanitary fabrication and anything where appearance and weld integrity matter more than deposition rate.

Alloy families as specification options+

Carbon steel rods cover general and structural joints and pipe roots. Stainless rods are matched to the base grade and to the corrosion and service requirement of the finished joint. Nickel alloy rods are used for corrosion-resistant service and for dissimilar joints. Aluminium rods are selected against the aluminium alloy being welded and the crack-sensitivity of the joint. Copper alloys and other families are supplied where specified. All of these are alloy options within this canonical product, selected against the base metal — separate public pages are not created per alloy grade.

Rod diameter, length and technique+

Rod diameter is matched to material thickness and joint size: thin rods for sheet, tube and root runs where heat input must stay low, larger rods for fill passes on heavier sections. Standard cut lengths are typical, with length affecting handling more than metallurgy. Because the welder feeds the rod manually, diameter choice has a direct effect on control, bead profile and the number of passes required.

Shielding gas and back purging+

Argon is the usual shielding gas, with argon-helium mixtures used where extra heat input is wanted on thicker or highly conductive material, and specific mixtures used for particular alloys. On stainless and nickel alloy pipe, the underside of the root also needs protection, so a back purge is normally part of the procedure. Gas selection, flow and purging requirements come from the procedure and the manufacturer's recommendations for the filler supplied.
