What flux-cored welding wire is+

Flux-cored wire is a tubular wire filled with flux rather than a solid rod. The flux forms slag and shielding gases as it burns, which stabilises the arc, protects the pool and supports high deposition rates — particularly out of position and on thicker material. FCAW is the workhorse of structural and heavy fabrication because a welder can lay down more metal per hour than with a solid wire at the same skill level, and because a slag cover helps the bead hold shape in vertical and overhead positions.

Gas-shielded and self-shielded wire+

Gas-shielded (FCAW-G) wire needs an external shielding gas, usually carbon dioxide or an argon-CO2 mixture, and generally gives cleaner arc characteristics, better bead appearance and stronger control of mechanical properties — which is why it dominates shop welding. Self-shielded (FCAW-S) wire generates its own shielding from the core and is chosen for field work where wind would strip an external gas shield, or where dragging gas around a structure is impractical. The two families are not interchangeable in a procedure: the classification, the properties and the equipment set-up all differ.

Classification, position and properties+

AWS classifications for carbon steel cored wires — the E7xT families in general terms — encode the tensile level, the usability and shielding type, and the position capability, while suffixes cover impact test temperature and diffusible hydrogen level. All-position wires allow vertical-up and overhead work; flat-and-horizontal wires deposit faster but restrict the joint positions. Where crack sensitivity matters, a low diffusible hydrogen designation is specified explicitly rather than assumed, along with the manufacturer's storage and reconditioning instructions.

Alloy families as specification options+

Carbon steel, low-alloy and stainless flux-cored wires are all produced. Low-alloy versions serve higher strength or low-temperature toughness requirements; stainless cored wires are used where a stainless deposit is specified and the productivity of a cored wire is wanted. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gas-shielded and self-shielded flux-cored wire?+

Gas-shielded wire requires an external shielding gas and generally gives cleaner arc behaviour and tighter property control, suiting shop welding. Self-shielded wire produces its own shielding from the core and suits field welding where wind would disturb a gas shield. They are separately classified and are not interchangeable within a procedure.

Is flux-cored wire suitable for all-position welding?+

Some classifications are all-position and support vertical-up and overhead welding; others are limited to flat and horizontal but deposit faster. Position capability is part of the classification and is specified with the wire.

What shielding gas is used with gas-shielded flux-cored wire?+
