What metal-cored welding wire is+
Metal-cored wire is a tubular wire whose core is filled mainly with metallic powder and arc stabilisers rather than slag-forming flux. Under gas shielding it behaves much like a solid wire but carries current in the sheath only, which gives a broad, high-deposition arc with very little slag to remove. It is classified as a composite electrode within the gas metal arc family, and it is chosen where deposition rate and travel speed matter and post-weld cleaning must stay minimal — typically mechanised and robotic cells.
Metal-cored, flux-cored and solid wire+
Compared with a solid wire of the same diameter, metal-cored wire usually deposits faster at the same current and produces wider, flatter fillets with good sidewall fusion and low spatter. Compared with a flux-cored wire, it leaves almost no slag, so multi-pass work needs less inter-pass cleaning — but it lacks the slag support that helps flux-cored wire hold a bead out of position, so position capability depends on the specific classification. The right choice follows the cell, the joint and the cleaning burden, not a general ranking.
Shielding gas, position and properties+
Metal-cored wires require an external shielding gas, most often an argon-rich mixture, and the gas has a direct effect on transfer mode, penetration profile and mechanical properties. Higher-argon mixtures generally support spray and pulsed transfer for productive flat and horizontal work; the manufacturer's data defines the permitted range. What is the difference between metal-cored and flux-cored wire?+
Metal-cored wire is filled mainly with metallic powder and leaves almost no slag, so inter-pass cleaning is minimal. Flux-cored wire forms a slag cover that supports the bead out of position and, in self-shielded form, can weld without external gas. Position capability and cleaning burden usually drive the choice.
Does metal-cored wire deposit faster than solid wire?+
At the same diameter and current, metal-cored wire generally deposits more metal and produces wider, flatter fillets with low spatter, because current flows through the sheath. Actual rates depend on the wire, gas, transfer mode and procedure.
What shielding gas is required?+
