Masonry Drill Bit — Carbide-Tipped Bit for Concrete, Brick & Block

A masonry drill bit is a drill bit with a hard carbide tip brazed or fitted to a steel body, designed for drilling concrete, brick, block and stone. Masonry is drilled by a combination of rotation and hammering rather than by cutting like metal: the carbide tip crushes the material at the bottom of the hole and the flutes carry the dust out. That is why bit geometry, flute design and tip configuration matter as much as diameter, and why a bit intended for masonry should not be treated as a general-purpose bit for other materials.

The dominant professional use is drilling holes for anchors and fixings: wedge anchors, sleeve anchors, screw anchors, plugs and threaded rod. Installers drill for racking, shelving, brackets, machine bases, handrails, conduit, cable tray, pipe supports and equipment mounting. Maintenance teams drill into existing structures for repairs and retrofits. In nearly every case the hole diameter and depth are dictated by the anchor manufacturer's instructions, so the bit is chosen from the anchor specification, not the other way round.

The shank is the end that fits the tool, and it must match the machine. Round-shank masonry bits are used in a standard three-jaw chuck on a drill or hammer drill. SDS-Plus is a slotted shank system used by rotary hammers: the bit slides into a dedicated chuck and locks in place while retaining a small amount of axial movement so the hammer mechanism can act on the bit directly. SDS-Plus bits fit SDS-Plus tools; they do not fit a standard chuck, and round-shank bits do not fit an SDS-Plus chuck. Other shank systems exist for larger rotary hammers and are quoted separately when required.

Diameter is normally set by the anchor or fixing being installed — the anchor manufacturer specifies the hole diameter, and the bit is bought to match. Length must give enough working depth for the required embedment plus clearance for dust at the bottom of the hole, while remaining short enough to control comfortably in the position you are working in. Buyers commonly stock a small range of diameters matched to the anchors they use and one or two lengths per diameter. Depth of the finished hole is always taken from the anchor instructions, not from the bit length.

Masonry bits are supplied with different carbide tip configurations — conventional two-cutter tips and multi-cutter head designs — and with different flute geometries affecting dust removal. Variants exist for different masonry conditions, including drilling into reinforced concrete where the bit may encounter rebar; where that is expected it should be stated in the enquiry, as it affects which specification is appropriate.
