It adsorbs selectively onto valuable sulphide surfaces and renders them hydrophobic while leaving iron sulphides comparatively unaffected, and it often contributes some froth character. It is commonly dosed as a secondary collector with a xanthate primary, so that recovery and selectivity are tuned independently. The combination and dosage are established by plant testwork.

The separation problem decides the collector: how much pyrite rejection you need, whether silver or gold values ride with the sulphides, and how the reagent will interact with the xanthate already in the circuit.
