Gas distribution pipe is a pressure application with a service life measured in decades, so the masterbatch is treated as part of the pipe's long-term performance package rather than as a cosmetic addition. Two questions decide the purchase: how the carbon black is dispersed for weathering and oxidation resistance, and how the yellow identification colour is delivered — as a solid yellow wall or as co-extruded stripes over a black pipe. Everything else in the specification follows from those two answers.
Why gas pipe is not "pipe in general"
General-purpose pipe masterbatch is chosen mainly for appearance, cost per kilogram and easy running on the extruder. Gas pipe reverses that priority order. The pipe is buried, pressurised, and expected to survive slow crack growth and oxidation for a very long time, so the additive package has to be stable, reproducible batch to batch, and neutral toward the base resin's long-term properties. A grade that is perfectly acceptable in a drainage or conduit line can be the wrong choice here simply because its dispersion consistency was never characterised for pressure service.
Carbon black dispersion is the primary technical criterion
For black pipe and for the black layer under a yellow stripe, the carbon black does the protective work. What matters is not only how much carbon black is present but how evenly it is distributed. Poorly dispersed agglomerates behave as stress concentrators in the pipe wall, and they leave the same wall thickness with a weaker weathering barrier because some regions are effectively under-pigmented.
Practical points to settle with the supplier before qualification:
- Dispersion rating method and the reference the supplier uses to report it.
- Particle-size class of the carbon black and whether the same source is used for every batch.
- Carrier resin: an HDPE carrier close to the pipe grade's flow behaviour reduces the risk of interfacial defects.
- Batch-to-batch variation data, not a single certificate from one favourable lot.
Yellow identification: solid wall or stripe
Gas distribution pipe is identified visually, and Canadian buyers usually see two constructions. A solid yellow pipe uses a pigmented wall throughout, which puts the colour system under the same weathering and pressure demands as the resin. A black pipe with co-extruded yellow stripes concentrates the colour into a thin outer layer, keeping carbon black as the protective system for the bulk of the wall.
The commercial consequence is different in each case. Solid yellow consumes far more pigment and makes pigment thermal stability and lightfastness a first-order question. Striping consumes very little colour concentrate but demands a stripe masterbatch that bonds cleanly to the black layer and extrudes without necking or edge feathering at line speed.
UV protection and long-term durability
Above-ground storage before installation is often where gas pipe takes most of its ultraviolet exposure. Both the black compound and the yellow stripe should be discussed in terms of expected outdoor storage time, because a yellow pigment that fades or chalks makes the pipe hard to identify even when the pipe itself is sound. Ask the supplier what pigment chemistry is used in the yellow, how it behaves under prolonged outdoor exposure, and whether they have data from stripe applications rather than from moulded parts.
Durability questions worth raising in the same conversation: interaction between the colour concentrate carrier and the resin's stabiliser package, and whether the concentrate introduces anything that could interfere with oxidation resistance.
Processing consistency on a pressure line
Gas pipe lines run continuously and are re-qualified rarely, so process stability is worth more than a small price advantage. A concentrate that varies in colour strength forces operators to chase let-down ratio, and every change in ratio is a change in the additive load in a pressure-bearing wall.
Watch for: consistent pellet size and bulk density for stable gravimetric dosing, absence of fines that segregate in the hopper, moisture control adequate for continuous running, and a melt behaviour compatible with the pipe head so stripe geometry stays uniform.
Testing and specification considerations
Gas distribution pipe is a regulated product, and the applicable requirements depend on your jurisdiction, the pipe standard your customer names, and the certification body involved. Allzone does not certify pipe or grant approvals; we supply masterbatch against the specification you provide. Bring the pipe standard and any customer-imposed requirement to the RFQ so the supplier can state, in writing, what its grade has been used for and what documentation it can provide.
Reasonable documentation to request: a technical data sheet, a safety data sheet, a certificate of analysis for the supplied lot, a statement of the pigment and carbon black sources, and any dispersion or weathering test reports the supplier already holds.
How this changes the buying decision
Compared with selecting a general pipe masterbatch, the gas pipe decision weights suppliers differently. Consistency evidence and traceability outrank price per kilogram. A supplier who can show repeatable dispersion data across lots and name the carbon black source is a better commercial risk than a cheaper grade with a single flattering test report. It is also worth qualifying two sources early, because re-qualifying a masterbatch mid-programme on a pressure line is expensive.
